Fire in Rasdhoo island dive centre, shops cause MVR1 mln in damages
Mihaaru FEBRUARY 12, 2017:
A diving centre, souvenir shop and storehouse burned down in the island of Rasdhoo in Alif Alif atoll on Saturday.
The damages caused to the three buildings, operated in a single land plot of the island as a family business, are estimated to exceed MVR 1 million.
According to the business’ owner Abdul Rasheed Adam, the fire had first caught at Rasdhoo Dive Centre before spreading to the adjacent souvenir store and shop which had served as a storehouse. All three were completely destroyed in the fire.
“The souvenir shop had goods worth around MVR 500,000. The other building had all the goods and materials for a shop. On top of that, a diving plant and compressor in there were also totally burnt.”
In addition to the three buildings, the fire had also affected a room of Abdul Rasheed’s house and the wall of a neighbour’s house.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which Abdul Rasheed guessed was a current short circuit.
While the diving centre was the only building that was insured, Abdul Rasheed said that the insurance period was already up.
“Our livelihoods are now at a stop. Everything was destroyed in the fire.”
Abdul Rasheed further recounted that while the police had responded immediately to the incident, they had not been equipped with firefighting equipment and had to resort to a water pump at the island’s Dhiraagu office to pump sea water to quell the fire.
